Balancing High School and Part-Time Work Part 2

Balancing High School and Part-Time Work
Part 2
Voicing your goals to someone else can help you make decisions and figure out your priorities. It can also help you judge whether you can do both – work and study- successfully. To help answer this question yourself:
v  Am I an organized person?
v  What kind of study habits do I have?
v  Do I make good use of my available time?
v  Will I be able to manage my schedule effectively if I take on a part-time job
Think about the pros and cons of working. On the plus side, a job can teach you about commitment, time management and responsibility- and of course handling money. On the minus side, a job can cut into the time you have for sleeping, studying and socializing.

How to Take on College Studying Part 1

How to Take on College Studying
Part 1
Develop Good Habits
In college, you’ll need to build on the study skills that you learned in high school. The demands of a college class are probably more rigorous than those you are used to.
You can succeed by knowing what to expect and how to handle it. Think of college as a ful-time job, in which you spend 40 hours a week on class, labs, study groups and doing homework.
Being organized and using your time well are essential. Learn more about time management, and use the guidelines below to develop your study skills.
Decide When to Study
Work out about how many hours you need to study every day. Then make A schedule.
      *            Figure out what blocks of time you have available throughout the day, in the evenings and on weekends.
      *            Consider what time of the day you are most alert- there are morning people and night owls- and try to schedule your studying accordingly.
      *            Think about whether you do better studying for a few hours at a time or sitting down for marathon sessions.

10 Time Management Tips for Students Tips 5-10

10 Time Management Tips for Students
Tips 5-10
Tip 5- Review Your Notes Every Day.
Reviewing helps you reinforce what you’ve learned, so you need less time to study before a test. You’ll also be ready if you get called on in class or have to take a pop quiz.
Tip 6. Get a Good Night’s Sleep
Your brain needs rest to perform at its peak. Lack of sleep makes the day seem longer and your tasks seem more difficult.
Tip 7. Communicate Your Schedule to Others.
If phone calls or text messages are proving to be a distraction, tell your friends that youa re only available at certain times of the day and to no expect a response at other times.
Tip 8. Become a Taskmaster
Give yourself a time budget and plan your activities accordingly. Figure out how much free time you have each week before you add any commitments.
Tip 9. Don’t Waste Time Agonizing.
Instead of agonizing and procrastinating, just do it. Wasting an entire evening worrying about something that you’re supposed to be doing is not productive, and can increase your stress.
Tip 10. Determine Your Priorities.
You can’t do everything at once. Establish the importance of each item. Then set realistic goals that are attainable.

7 Habits of Highly Successful Teens Habit 3

7 Habits of Highly Successful Teens
Habit 3
Habit 3: Put First Things First
Habit there is about Will and Will Not power. This habit helps teens prioritize and manage their time so that they focus on and complete the most important things in their lives. Putting first things first also means learning to overcome fears and being strong during difficult times. It’s living life according to what matters most. Putting first things first deals with things that are:
Important or not important, urgent or not urgent.  Let’s look at the four quadrants of time management.
Quadrant 1: things that are Important and Urgent.
Quadrant 2: Things that are Important but not urgent.
Quadrant 3: Things that are Not Important but are Urgent
Quadrant: 4 Things that are not Important and Not Urgent.
1.  Important & Urgent
2.  Important but not urgent
3.  Not important but are Urgent
4.  Not important and Not urgent

Quadrant 2 is the ideal place to spend your time, doing things that are important but not urgent. Here’s where priorities come in play.
The results for living quadrant 2 are:
    I.      Control of your life
   II.      Balance
  III.      High Performance
So, in what quadrant are you spending most of your time? The key is to shift as much time as possible into quadrant 2 and this is accomplished by panning. Spend more time Planning and incorporating the most important things first things that matter most. Keep your eyes on the prize and reach for it.

Successful Students 10

Successful Students
10
10. Successful students are good time managers. Successful students do not procrastinate. They have learned that time control is life control and have continuously chosen to be in control of their life.
An elemental truth: you will either control time or be controlled by it! It’s your choice: you can lead or be leas, establish control or relinquish control, steer your own course or follow others. Failure to take control of their own time is probably the no. I study skills problem for college students. It ultimately causes many students to become non-students! Procrastinators are good excuse-makers. Don’t make academics harder on yourself than it has to be. Stop Procrastinating. And don’t wait until tomorrow to do it!
The 10 items listed above are paraphrased from an article by Larry M Ludewing called the Ten Commandments for Effective Study Skills which appeared in The Teaching Professor, December, 1992.

Study for Multiple Test Part 3

Study for Multiple Test
Part 3
English, math, foreign language tips: Practice – especially foreign language. It is hard to succeed in a foreign language class if you are just showing and doing the work. But if you are in your room and looks at objects and try to say them in the language you are learning it actually helps. Or if you send a simple text to a friend think about it, can you translate that to German or Spanish? These are the little things that will help.
Here are my final words of wisdom for students who want to get better grades in college: Time management and organization are critical key factors to succeed in college. And never be afraid to go ask your teacher for help. They have office hours for a reason-use them!

Sarah’s Academic Success Story Part 2

Sarah’s Academic Success Story
Part 2
My test study method: I have different strategies for different types of tests or subjects. For me, any type of math is exceptionally difficult so I had to spend extra time on that. I would go back through the homework problems focusing on the problems that I had extra difficulty on. Many times I would ask the teacher for any additional study materials they could provide. If it was a class that required memorization or applying concepts I would create a sort of study guise for myself many times focusing on what where key focal points in the class. If I knew there were going to be essays I would try to take the terms and apply to an example or create different questions on the concepts focused on throughout the semester.
My time management secret: I always always always carry a planner with me. I even use different color highlighters to show what each even in my calendar is for. For example, pink in personal, yellow is school, orange is work, blue is appointments, and green is for my sorority. Although I use white-out frequently, I can see in bright yellow that if I have that project on finance due on Tuesday, I need to start working on it [the previous]
Wednesday so I can just get things accomplished but that is really all I do.

Effective Study Methods Part 2

Effective Study Methods
Part 2
My time management secret: My secret is to use time wisely: I know that on certain days I do not have time to run errands or hang out with friends even. Each minute of each day is used for something. One thing that works really well for me is to write everything down. I mean everything. I write down if I am going to email people, write letters or study. It works for me to have a planner that goes by the day and shows me what I am going to be doing every day. Knowing what I have to do every day helps me plan out my week and my days .If I don’t have time Tuesday, I will try to get more things done on Monday or Sunday. I plan ahead, especially if I am going to be on the road for volleyball. When I am on the road, I bring my books and read on the bus/plane/hotel room. Missing class is killer to make up from, but if you are upfront with your professors, they are usually nice about having to turn things in late or not being in classes.
