"Disciplining, yourself to do what you know is right and important, although difficult, is the highroad to pride, self-esteem, and personal satisfaction"
Margaret Thatcher
A British politician, the longest-serving (1979-1990) Prime Minister of the United Kingdom of the 20th century.
Reflection:
I think that you should always do what is right. You should train yourself to always do what is right. There will be times in which you will be the only one who will choose to do the right. You must learn to stick to doing what is right even if others are doing what is wrong. For example you are suppose to walk at a certain area only, most of the people ignore the rule. This is choosing the wrong, but you have discipline yourself to always choose what is right so you follow the rule. It might be difficult to always do what is right, specially if you are alone. But in the end doing what is right will only make you a good and better person.

Balancing High School and Part-Time Work Part 3

Balancing High School and Part-Time Work
Part 3
Brad MacGowan, of the Career Center at Newton North High School in Massachusetts, thinks that working can be a valuable part of a student’s life, if taken on responsibility. “You can derive a great deal from working, considerably more than just money,” he says.  “In most cases, you can require a nice dose of discipline and a whole new set of skills and experiences. “In addition, your supervisor may be willing to write a strong college recommendation for you.
School Comes First.
Schoolwork, including homework and studying for test, should always be your top priority. MacGowan cautions students who do decide to work, “If you are rushing through assignment’s… or not studying enough for test because of work, it’s time to cut back or quit and find a less time-consuming job.

"What you are will show in what you do. "
Thomas A. Edison
I think that this means that what ever you do will reflect who you are. If you are early to a meeting it shows that you are responsible  When you are late to a meeting it shows that you  are irresponsible and that you do not care. I think that people should always do good things in order to let others know how good they are. If you have bad habits, or you do something bad people will see you as a bad person. Your actions tell other people the type of person you are. For example if you have good grades a person will assume that you are smart or that you are a good student.

Balancing High School and Part-Time Work Part 2

Balancing High School and Part-Time Work

Voicing your goals to someone else can help you make decisions and figure out your priorities. It can also help you judge whether you can do both – work and study- successfully. To help answer this question yourself:
v  Am I an organized person?
v  What kind of study habits do I have?
v  Do I make good use of my available time?
v  Will I be able to manage my schedule effectively if I take on a part-time job
Think about the pros and cons of working. On the plus side, a job can teach you about commitment, time management and responsibility- and of course handling money. On the minus side, a job can cut into the time you have for sleeping, studying and socializing.

Summary/Reflection

Summary:
This article was about two grandparents. They had their granddaughter locked up in the bathroom for six years. They only let her out when she needed to go school. They had her in bad condition, she barely had any food. The grandparents can spend up to 15 years in prison.
Reflection:
I think that the grandparents choose the wrong by doing what they did to the little girl. She had not done anything wrong. I don't think the little girl deserved to be locked up in the bathroom. I think that the grandparents should pay for what they did. I don't think that anyone deserves to be locked up like the little girl, she did nothing wrong,.

Balancing High School and Part-Time Work Part 1

Balancing High School and Part-Time Work
Part 1
Like many high school students, you may want – or need- to work part time. Working takes a lot of time and energy, though, so before getting a job, make sure that you think about your ability to handle both work and your education.
Important Considerations
You have to weight a number of factors when deciding whether to take on a part-time job. It’s important to get as much information as possible, so you can figure out what choice makes the most sense for you.
Schedule a meeting with your school counselor to discuss the idea of working. Talk top your counselor about why you want to work and what type of position you’re seeking

"If it is not right, do not do it; if it is not true, do not say it"
Marcus Aurelius
Roman Emperor from 161 Ad to 180 AD
I think that one should always do what this statement is saying. If you know what the right thing to do is, then do it. If you know what the wrong thing to do is then do not do it. Same goes with saying the truth if you know the truth say it. If something is not true then don't say it. For example if your parents ask you where have you been and you tell them you where at school and this is the truth than that is okay to do. You are not saying a lie, so it is good.

If you have concerns about your class schedule or progress in school, set up a meeting with your school counselor, teacher or adviser. There are many resources to help you with this process, and with achieving your personal, college and career goals. Without goals, you meander all sorts of directions. Goals give you purpose, direction, enthusiasm, and passion for which you really desire. In any moment of decision, the best thing you can do is the right thing.”
Theodore Roosevelt
I think that this quote is true. You must always choose to do what is right at any moment you need to make a decision. You must always choose to do the right thing. For example if your parents tell you to tell them the truth you have a decision to make. You could decide to say the truth or lie. The right thing to do would be to say the truth. The wrong thing to do is to lie. Because when taking a decision you always need to choose the right thing to do, and saying the truth is the right thing to do, you will not lie, and you will say the truth.

The Arts
Research indicates that students who participate in the arts often do better in school and on standardized test. The arts help you recognize patterns, discern differences and similarities, and exercise your mind in unique ways, often outside a traditional classroom setting.
Many colleges require or recommend one or two semesters in the arts. Good choices include studio art, dance, music and drama. Many students have talents and extraordinary abilities in the arts. Students should look within their own repertoire of talents and identify their artistic abilities and take college classes to develop their talents.
Advanced Placement Program (AP)
To be sure you are ready to take on college-level work, enroll in the most challenging courses you can in high school, such as honors or AP courses. Research consistently shows that students who score a 3.0 or higher on an AP Exam typically experience greater academic success and college graduation rates than students who don’t take AP.
Work hard in your righteous pursuits, and you will reap the benefits of self-fulfillment and job satisfaction. Don’t take shortcuts just to “get by,” instead, take challenging, and difficult roads (courses) and reach higher mountain peaks of achievement.

“To know what is right and not do it is the worst cowardice”
Confucius
I think that what this quote means is that you are being more of a coward when you do not do what is right. When you know what the right thing to do is then you should do it. You should not be scared of doing what is right. Not doing what is right makes you a coward. For example lying is not the right thing to do, therefore when you lie you are being a coward. You could be a coward to not do things that you are scared of, but that’s okay. You must never be a coward when it comes to doing what is right.

Social Studies
You can better understand local and world events that are happening now by studying the culture and history that has shaped them. Here is a suggested course plan:
    *            U.S. history (two semesters)
    *            U.S. government (one semester)
    *            World history or geography (one semester)
    *            One additional semester in the above or other areas
Foreign languages
Solid foreign language study shows colleges you’re willing to stretch beyond the basics. Many colleges require at least two years of study in the same foreign language, and some prefer more.
Learning a foreign language can be a challenge but is exciting. Repetition is the key to learning a language, and having conversations with others speaking the same language is the best way to learn this new language. Repetition in a fun way will build your skills thoroughly as you seek to master ne languages.

“Have the courage to say no. Have the courage to face the truth. Do the right thing because it is right. These are the (3) magic keys to living your life with integrity.”
W. Clement Stone
In order to be honest you must always say the truth. No matter what the consequences are if you want to live your life with integrity you must say the truth. Also if you want to live with integrity you must always do what is right just for the fact that it is the right thing to do. I think that this statement is true. If you want to live your life with integrity you must follow these keys. For example if you are supposed to be out at a certain time, but your friends tell you to stay longer and you say no, that is living with integrity.

Science
Science teaches you to think analytically and apply theories to reality. Colleges want to see that you’ve taken at least three years of laboratory science classes. A good combination includes two semesters of each of the following sciences:
*      Biology
*      Chemistry or physics
*      Earth/space science
More competitive schools expect you to take four years of lab science courses. You can add two semesters in one of the following subjects:
*      Chemistry or physics (the science you didn’t already study)
*      Advanced biology
*      Advanced chemistry
*      Advanced physics

The following subjects and classes are standard fare for success in high school and beyond, whether you plan to attend a four-year or two-year college.
English (Language Arts)
Take English every year. Traditional courses, such as American and English literature, help improve your writing skills, reading comprehension and vocabulary.
Math
You need algebra and geometry to succeed on college entrance exams and in college math classes – and in many careers. Take them early on. That way, you’ll be able to enroll in advance science and math in high school, and show colleges you’re ready for higher- level work.
 Most colleges look for students who have taken three years of math in high school. The more competitive one requires or recommend four years. Each school has its own program, but some of the courses typically offered are:
      *            Algebra 1
      *            Algebra 2
      *            Geometry
      *            Trigonometry
      *            Calculus

'Tis the Set of the Sail

'Tis the Set of the Sail
Ella Wheeler Wilcox 1916
But to every mind there openeth,
A way, and a way, and a way.
A high soul climbs the highway,
And the low soul gropes the low,
And in between on the misty flats,
The rest drift to and fro.

But to every man there be openeth,
A high way and a low,
And every mind decideth,
The way his soul shall go.

One ship sails East,
And another WEst,
By the self-same winds that blow,
'Tis the set of the sails
And not the gales,
That tells the way we go.
Like the winds of the sea
Are the waves of time,
As we journey along through life,
'Tis the set of the soul,
That determines the goal,
And not the calm or the strife.

The academic rigor of your high school courses is an important factor in the college admission process. College admission officers see your high school course schedule as a blueprint of your education. They’re looking for a solid foundation of learning that you can build on in college.
To create that foundation, take at least five solid academic classes every semester. Star with the basics and then move on to advanced courses. Challenging yourself is part of what makes school fun; but you need a firm group of the fundamentals before going on to more adavanced work.

“A man without a goal is like a ship without a ruder.”
Thomas Carlyle
Reflection: I think that this quote is correct. When someone does not have a goal one has no idea where one is going. If a boat does not have a ruder it is just traveling where ever the win takes it. For example if one has the goal to graduate from high school, one has a path to follow. If one did not have a goal one would not know what to do. It is important to have goals because they set you up for your future, they create a path for your future. This way you know what you want and you know how to get to what you want. If you did not have a goal you would just do tittle things here and there and they would not help you in your future.

Getting the Most Out of a Session
Here are some tips to help your group get the most out of each study session:
      *            Decide what you’re going to do in advance.
      *            Prepare for the session, so you can make the most of your time together.
      *            Take turns teaching, so you can, make the most of your time together.
      *            Take turns teaching, to reinforce your own knowledge.
      *            Stick to the session topic.
By supplementing your individual study group, you can reinforce what you’ve already learned, deepen your understanding of complex concepts, and maybe even make a few new friends. Remember that a friend is a person who encourages you to do your beat and to achieve on a high level, one who pushes you to try a little harder and be a litter better. If someone pulls you down the wrong trails of life, then those people are not friends, (they are actually your enemies), and you must avoid them at all cost. Whoever said learning can’t be fun? Learning is enjoyable and exciting when you study with others.

Guidelines for Getting Group Together
Here are some guidelines for creating and running a study group: How many? Create a group of four to six people. In a larger group, it’s easy for someone to get left out and smaller groups can too easily get off track.
Who? Pick classmates who seem to share your interest in doing well academically. Look for people who stay alert in class, take notes, ask questions and respond to the teacher’s questions. Include someone who understands the material belter than you and can explain the concepts and someone who doesn’t understand it as well, to whom you can explain the material.
Where? Hold a study group sessions in a place that is free of distractions and that has room to spread out books and notes.
How long? Meet for no more than two to three hours at a time. Having a time limit helps the group focus. If you know you only have an hour, you’re more likely to stay on task.
When? Try to meet regularly, on the same day and time each week.
Treating the study session as you would other activities helps you to keep to a schedule and reassures that everyone attends.

The Benefits of Study Groups
Group study offers other advantages in addition to gaining a deeper understanding of class material. These include the opportunity to: Reinforce note-taking. If your AP Biology notes are unclear, you can ask a member of your study group to help you fill the gaps. Share Talents. Each person brings different strengths, such as organizational skills, the ability to stick to a task or a capacity for memorization.
Cover more ground. Group members may be able to solve a calculus problem together that none would have solved alone.
Benefit from a support system. Members often have common goals, such as good grades. Each person’s work affects the other members, which results in making members supportive of one another. Socialize. It’s more fun to study with others; the give-and-take makes it more interesting. And because it’s more fun, you spend more time studying!

Goals
“In life as in football, you won’t go far, unless you know where the goalposts are.”
Arnold Glasgow
Reflection: I think that what this quote is saying is that if you do not have any goals then you don’t know where to go. It is important to have goals because they tell you where to go. With each knew goal you decide what path to take in order to achieve your goal. If you had no goal in life then you do not know what path to take. For example your goal is to have an A in English class. In order to achieve this goal, you need to make sure that you do all your work, and have great grades in any test. This will be your path to getting to your goal. If you had no goal you wouldn't be able to know what to do.

Working Together Helps Everyone
You may have notice that when you’re explaining something you’ve learned to a friend, you begin to understand it betters yourself. This happens because, when you explain an idea, you need to think more deeply about it.
The same principle makes study groups useful. Studying with others in a small group is helpful because you:
*      Think out loud.
*      Share Ideas.
*      Learn from one another.
In an effective Study group, you and other students hash out lesson materials together – explaining concepts, arguing about them, figuring out why one person’s answer differs from another’s – and in the process, you must likely learn more than you would have studying by yourself.

Walk the Talk

    This video is about how we need to start acting good. We need to start doing what is right. We need to not do what most of the people do but what is the right thing to do. This video is about how when you do something good you only get good consequences. As long as we always do what is right, as long as we always choose to do what is right we will only have positive consequences.
    This video put me in a very calm mood. It made me think about the choices I've made, and how some of them where not good choices but most of them where good.

Reflection: I think that this quote is true. If you make a choice there will always be a consequence. The consequence does not necessarily have to be bad, it could be good. For example if you decide to study for a test, the consequence is that you will do good in the test. This is a good consequence. This was your choice and you where the one that got the consequences. The choices you make will only affect you for the reason that you made the decision. No one can take you consequences when it was you that made the choice.

*      Don’t skim. Read all the material carefully.
*      Break up difficult assignments into sections you can digest- chapters, subsections or even paragraphs.
*      Look up any words that you don’t understand.
*      Pause to think about whether you understand the material; ask questions in class about anything that in unclear.
*      Take notes instead of highlighting- this makes you think through and rephrase the key points.
*      Create a summary sheet of what you learned from each assignment you read.
