To be respectful means to be polite. For example you show respect for someone when you listen to them when they are talking. Another way you can show respect is by being nice. You are being disrespectful when you are being rude.
I think it is important to be respectful, because it is not nice to be rude. I think that I wouldn't like for someone to disrespect me, therefore I will not disrespect anyone. It is important to be respectful because others will be respectful, to you if you are respectful to them.
